President confers National Child Awards on 16 children, including Zaira Wasim from 'Dangal'

On the occasion of Children’s Day, President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the National Child Awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

The National Child Awards include awards for exceptional achievement that give recognition to children with exceptional abilities and outstanding achievements in the fields of innovation, scholastic achievements, sports, arts, culture, social service, and music; awards for child welfare to institutions and individuals for their outstanding work in the field of child welfare; and the Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Awards to individuals for their outstanding contribution towards service for children.

The National Award for Child Welfare was conferred on three individuals and five institutions. The Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award was conferred on three individuals, says a report by NDTV.

Awardees are: Master Akash Manoj, Master Shahil Dey, Master Shresth Agrawal, Master Nishant Abhangi, Master Jaysheel Buddhadeo, Kumari Zaira Wasim, Kumari Nikhiya Shamsher, Master Swasthik Padma, Master Floyd Emmanuel Libera, Master Rishabh Garg, Master Jaisal Shah, Kumari Labdhi Surana, Master Krishna Pandit, Kumari Saniya Subash, Master Aryan Chopra, and Kumari Kashish.

In a message sent to the Ministry of Women and Child Development on the occasion of Children’s Day, the president said,

Children are the future of our country. We must make every effort to ensure their welfare. We should also make all possible efforts to ensure that children in our country have a safe and happy childhood. Every child is a bud waiting to blossom. By awarding children, we recognise and encourage their talent and potential for nation building. We should also recognise the significant contribution of individuals and institutions who work for causes related to children.

Later in the day, the president celebrated Children’s Day at Rashtrapati Bhavan with children from various institutions. The president also called for the recognition of significant contributions of individuals and institutions who work for causes related to children, said an official release.

Children in the age group of 5–18 years were eligible for the awards.

The child with the most outstanding achievement was honoured with a cash prize of Rs 20,000, a certificate/citation and a gold medal. Fifteen other children were honoured with a cash prize of Rs 10,000, a certificate/citation, and a silver medal each for this year. Since 2015, the gold and silver awardees have also been given book vouchers of Rs 10,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.
